Hamilton County has grown fast, and its roads have been rebuilt to keep up: roundabouts by the hundred, new interchanges, and seasons of construction. Most of the time it works. But new road designs plus a steady stream of new drivers can breed confusion, and confusion causes crashes.
Where crashes happen
- Roundabouts. Carmel alone has more than 160 of them, by the city's count. Failing to yield on entry and changing lanes inside two-lane roundabouts cause many of the crashes. See Carmel.
- SR 37 in Fishers. Stoplights at 126th, 131st, 141st and 146th streets were replaced with interchanges; the last opened in May 2026. See Fishers.
- I-69, the main commuter route into Indianapolis.
- US 31 through Carmel and Westfield.
- Concert traffic near Ruoff Music Center in the Noblesville area. See Noblesville.
Who writes the report
It depends where it happened: Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville or Westfield police in those cities; the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office in unincorporated areas; and often the Indiana State Police on I-69.
Courts
Hamilton County's courts sit in the Government and Judicial Center at 1 Hamilton County Square in Noblesville, the county seat.
